Donnie didn't find it all that insulting of a question, to be honest.
I may look cool and awesome right now,
He began, laughing a bit.
But, I used to be the biggest loser... ever. People hated me. I hated people. I got teased, beat up, picked on. You name anything about the loser at your school... that was me.

Sam smiled and laughed quietly as Donnie began his response, enjoying his attitude toward the topic. Sam's smile shrank a bit and he nodded knowingly as he went on. "I didn't get beat up," he said. "But I didn't have any friends. You name anything about that dark, artsy loner at your school... That was me," Sam smirked. "I was lucky enough to find some great friends in my last couple of years of school, though," he said. He swallowed, glancing at the grass. "But we all kinda went our separate ways after graduation." His voice had grown quieter as he spoke. He didn't mention the heroin addictions. Or the fire.

Donnie dared not say what he went through at school... The intense stuff. The drugs. The... other things. He didn't have friends in school, so he made friends that were out of school. The 'bad influence' kids, everyone called them.
Getting beat up wasn't so bad. Not like it was everyday.
Donnie listened to him talk, and chuckled a bit at the 'artsy loner' comment. The artsy loner in his school... was him. He decided not to comment on what he'd said about his friends. The fact that his voice grew quieter, gave him signal that he didn't want to talk about it.

Sam tried hard to push the thoughts to the back of his mind, to lock them away in a place where he couldn't and would not think of them. It hurt far too much to think of those things, to remember those times...
Swallowing hard, he managed to regain his composure. He glanced up at Donnie, glad that his momentary lapse hadn't caused him to ask any questions that Sam wasn't ready to answer. His favourite subject, however, was an easy one.
"Yes," he answered, a smirk tugging at the corner of his lips. "Art." Like no one had seen that one coming. "You?"

Donnie knew better than to ask too many questions. He himself wasn't much on questions. They all went right back to things he never wanted to talk about.
English,
He said, not too surprised by Sam's response to be honest. It wasn't a bad thing. He himself would have enjoyed art if it weren't for one thing.
I sucked at art. I was never any good at what I did. I don't have the dedication.

Sam shrugged. "Everybody's different, right?" he said. "Art just wasn't your thing. And trust me, English certainly wasn't mine," he said, shaking his head and laughing quietly. "I tended to be a bit... morbid," he said, for lack of a better word. "I had a habit of freaking my teachers out a bit, without intention of course," he smirked.
